Writer Meme...thing

Thu Feb 5, 2009, 8:22 PM
  • Mood: Content
  • Listening to: .Hack//G.U. Soundtrack
  • Reading: I'm looking for something good to read.
  • Watching: Nothing really
  • Playing: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
  • Eating: Chicken
  • Drinking: Dr.P
Hmm...I've had that Christmas journal for long enough, so I was planning to post something new. And :iconjulietcaesar: had the cure! So let's get this train wreck a-rolling.

1. What led you to write?
Hm...tough question. I don't think any specific instance really leads you to write, it just sort of happens. But if I really had to answer...I'd guess I'd say books in general and some animes and mangas. I just feel really inspired when I read a good book or manga.

2. When did you start writing?
Ever since I started learning how to write them tricky 'Q's
...
Okay, that was sorta silly. XP
I guess I started really making serious stories in...what? 4th? 5th grade? So...when I was 9? My teacher would have us writing about a topic she would give us everyday. I would get really into'em and write some REALLY long stuff, at least, by my standards back then. Heh, I once wrote a story about "what if your hair suddenly came alive?" It was really funny what I wrote. XD
Oh! And during that same year, during the summer, I bought a notebook and began writing in it for fun. And by the end of that summer break I had finished a sort of...small chapter book. It was great. It was my first (and so far, last) complete story. It was riddled with plot holes, deus ex machina's, grammar issues, typo's, and who knows what else! But I loved it. Yep. I also wrote a sequel during the next summer, and ever since then it's been a sort of annual thing for me to write a story or series during the summer.

3. What does writing represent in your life?
Another tough question...Uh....Let me think....
It's something fun to do...and it releases some stress...It's just a very relaxing thing to do sometimes. So I guess writing is sort of like my safety blanket, making me feel better and all that. But it's also a fun way to let out some creativity, especially since my art skill is zero.

4. Are you happy with your current style?
I'm still an amateur writer, most likely because I don't write as often as I'd like. Honestly, I think :iconjulietcaesar: is a much better writer than me. ^^;
If I had to nit-pick at my current style...then...
1.) I feel like I draw attention to something that doesn't really need it.
2.) Run-on sentences.
3.) I go off into random tangents that have very little importance to the story, if I'm not careful.
4.) My sentence structure is horrible sometimes.
5.) It's sometimes difficult for me to explain someone's emotions or feelings.

Although, I change my "style" depending on the kind of story I'm writing.

5. Do you do editing?
Um, duh? Of course.
If I didn't edit, my stories would look terrible. Although, sometimes I accidentally pass over somethings and I'll still submit and it'll just look terrible. That's why I'm almost constantly editing my submissions here on DevArt. I really should check my stories more than once or twice before submitting.

6. Do you read about writing (creative writing books, grammar books...)?
Mm...Those don't really seem to help. I kind of absorb the knowledge, but most if comes in through one ear and out the ear, you know?
The best way to learn is by reading books, I think. Whenever I get stuck in a story, such as how to describe a scene or a feeling, or even how to structure a paragraph, I bust open a book. Although having a good dictionary and/or thesaurus around is always a plus.

7. Favourite genre?
I read the typical genre's, you know, action/adventure, fantasy, sometimes sci-fi, those sort of things. Although I'll read anything, as long as it's good.

8. Favourite author(s)?
Umm....I guess it's kind of rude to the authors to say this, and I'm almost certain that if/when I become an author it'll come and bite me in the butt, but...I really can't remember most of the author's names after I read a book. But I don't really have a favorite author, either way.

9. Favourite book?
Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher
My Side of the Mountain
Dragon's Blood

10. What do you prefer to write?
Oh...anything that I feel like writing really. If I'm in the mood for something hard and serious, I'll go with it. If I'm in the mood for something light and short, I'll go with it.

11. Is there anything you can't write?
Hmm...like I said earlier...Writing out a character's emotions or feelings is difficult for me at times. So is describing a setting/scene.
If we're talking genres... I dunno, hardcore romantic stuff, I would guess. And political things.

12. What is the weirdest thing you have ever written?
I once wrote a story about a crocodile appearing in my bathtub.

13. Choose a topic: love, death, friendship. Now write a couple of lines about it.
O...kay....?

Love: Fickle, everchanging, frantic. Fulfilling, yet not at times. Eternal, yet not. Embracing, yet not. Quite a fickle mistress, she is, Love.

Death: Death, ever approaching no matter how hard we try to run from it. We grow older, wiser, and stronger only to face death at the end. Since we know that death is inevitable, why not live life to it's fullest?

Friendship: The only thing that keeps me going.

14. Do you think you have influences from any professional writer? if so, which ones?
Oh, I'm sure. Though I have no idea who. I'm sure I've been slowly absorbing influences from every writer I've come across. Not to mention everything else I've been exposed to.

15. Worst book you have read so far?
I only read good ones.

16. Why is it so bad, in your opinion?
. . .
MOVING ON!

17. Choose one of your characters and describe them in 3 words.
Seio Skylan- Happy-go-lucky (wait, that's already three words...XD), Hyper, generous

18. Does your character feel 'alive'?
Urgh...this is not a fun question for me. I feel that my characters are influenced too much by manga sometimes, and I feel that some of them come off as too...fake. Like, it's not a personality you would normally come across. There are times when I make a break-through and make them feel human, though. Let's just say I'm working on it.

19. Could you kill this character?
I wouldn't like to, but if it would make the story progress smoothly and add a good twist to it, I could.

20. Do you hate any of your own characters?
My characters are all my children, I couldn't hate any of them. Even the villains.

21. Now, let's be honest. Every writer has their own favourite creation: what's your favourite story, out of everything you have written/planned to write? and character?
Roads of Destiny and Purpose. It's really the first story I really planned out, I started toying with the idea three years ago and only started writing it the past year or so. Although, I feel that 1.)The title is too cheesy (XD). And 2.) There are too many plot holes I can't fill.
Like I said, the story's been toyed with for years. And it's been through some major edits. But now it has too many holes I can't fill, I'm actually thinking of dropping it...Depressing thought, but I can't really see how to fix the story right now. Maybe when I'm more experienced I'll come back to it.
Favorite character? Seio, most definitely. He was the first character I put DEEP thought into. Before, I just sorta came up with names and appearances, but with Seio I even went so far to think of his favorite foods, colors, his birthday, height, weight, hobbies/pastimes, and random trivia. (Plus his backstory and history.) He was the first and I now do this with most of my characters, except the minor ones.

22. Have you ever abandoned an idea for a story? Why?
Plenty of times, it's usually because I don't think the whole plot/story through before writing.

23. Have you ever deleted a whole piece of work? Why?
Well, I've given up writing several stories, but I never throw them away. It's always nice to go back and read your old work every once and awhile, even if they are terrible. It gives me a wonderful sense of nostalgia and usually makes me laugh at how terrible I was back then. Although...I can't do that with some of my work, SINCE SOMEONE (MOM! D< ) ACCIDENTALLY THREW MY WRITING NOTEBOOK AWAY! TT-TT That was the worst week ever.

24. And finally: make up a completely original character right now and describe him briefly. It doesn't even have to be human!
Name:Ashren Grey
A Short, slightly chubby, girl with a mess of long curly hair. She likes to wear glasses, although she doesn't need them. (The glasses have no lens, and she thinks it makes her look more sophisticated.) Appearance wise, she looks to be the shy-type but is really the total opposite. In fact, she'll randomly go up to people she doesn't know and strike up a conversation. She has sometimes been compared to an affectionate puppy. Always the opmtimist, and easily cheers people up. She has an odd "aura" around her that somehow affects other people. If she is happy, the people around her become more cheerful. If she's upset, the people around her start to feel a bit gloomy.

Random facts:
Has no fashion sense, and will sometimes dress ridiculously.
Ironically, she enjoys drawing fashion designs.
Her main form of transportation are a pair of worn roller-blades.
*Done*

Aww...she came out so cute. She definitely sounds like someone I would hang out with.

Anyways, I'm done! I gotta say, that was quite fun! And if anyone wants to do it, go ahead.
